Tadodaho successfully led his Onondaga in raids against the nearby Cayuga people and traveled west, and attacked the Seneca people. He scared his own people and threatened other peoples, including the Seneca and Cayuga nations.

Tadodaho ruled with fear, and his people believed him to be a sorcerer. He is said to have had a "twisted body" and could kill his enemies from a distance without seeing them.

Jean Houston and Margaret Rubin write in Manual for the Peacemaker that Tadodaho had "matted and spiky hair", and that this visage lent itself to legends that he had snakes in his hair. Hewitt recounted an Iroquois tale which refers to Tadodaho as a "misshapen monster". In the 1883 work The Iroquois Book of Rites, edited by Horatio Hale, the term Atartaho is said to signify "entangled". Depending on the speaker's dialect and the writer's orthography, other versions of the name include Adodarhoh, Atartaho, Atotarho, Tatotarho, Thatotarho, and Watatohtahro. Tadodaho was said to be a warrior and primary chief of the Onondaga people. The majority, however, remained in their ancestral valley. Another faction remained loyal to the British, and, upon the breakup of the Iroquois Confederacy after the American Revolution, a small party followed other members to Grand River in what is now Ontario. In the 18th century a sizable faction of Onondaga favouring the French interest migrated to Jesuit mission settlements along the St. With 14 seats in the council, the Onondaga furnished the chairman and the archivist, who kept the records of transactions in wampum belts. The Onondaga tribe, one of the five original nations of the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) Confederacy, was the political and geographical centre of the league. A council of adult males in each community guided the village chiefs. They grew corn (maize), beans, squash, sunflowers, and tobacco. They moved these houses periodically to plant new fields, to seek fresh supplies of firewood, and to be nearer fish and game.
